Five youths, ages 8 to 17, die in fiery SUV crash on Hutchinson River Parkway in Scarsdale, NY
Five youths, ages 8 to 17, died in a fiery SUV crash on the Hutchinson River Parkway in Scarsdale, NY, early Sunday, police said.
The victims were traveling north when their Nissan Rogue veered off the parkway just north of the Mamaroneck Road exit, according to Westchester County police.
Cops believe the vehicle was being driven by a 16-year-old boy. Based on the preliminary investigation, he wasn’t speeding, law enforcement sources said.
The Rogue slammed into a tree and burst into flames, cops said. The driver died in the crash along with three boys and a girl. All five lived in Derby, Conn.
The victims names were not immediately released.
A 9-year-old boy riding in the rear cargo area of the SUV was the crash’s only survivor, cops said. He escaped out the back of the vehicle and was taken to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Westchester County Police Accident Investigation Team and detectives from the county’s General Investigations Unit are probing the crash.
